Globalisierung vom Wasser aus

Auf den Meeren formte sich die Welt zur Einheit. Als Medien der Globalisierung schufen Karten Voraussetzungen für die Intensivierung des Schiffsverkehrs. Sie wiesen Reisenden, Kaufleuten wie auch Migrantinnen und Migranten Wege in einer Welt, die zunehmend als räumliches Kontinuum anmutete. Als Seekarten ermöglichten sie eine immer präzisere Navigation; als Welt- oder besser Weltmeereskarten verhalfen sie zu einem Bewusstsein über globale Zusammenhänge mitsamt ihrer Verwerfungen. Vor allem aber erlaubten es Karten, die Welt als ein Ganzes zu betrachten und zu begreifen – ein Ganzes, dessen Teile durch die Meere verbunden sind und nicht getrennt.

Über das Projekt

Die virtuelle Ausstellung »Karten Wissen Meer. Globalisierung vom Wasser aus« zeigt Karten und weitere Objekte aus der Sammlung Perthes der Forschungsbibliothek Gotha und der Kartensammlung des Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseums in Bremerhaven. Sie wird durch das Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF) und den Leibniz-Aktionsplan »Eine Welt in Bewegung« gefördert und basiert auf Forschungen eines Verbunds von Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern des Forschungskollegs Transkulturelle Studien / Sammlung Perthes der Universität Erfurt, der Universität Bremen und des Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseums unter dem Titel »Karten-Meere.
